Platinum Energy integrates patented Jatropha with breakthrough biomass processing technology.

Kuala Lumpur, May 13, 2008: Malaysia can now claim to have its very own end-to-end green energy solution as Platinum Energy Sdn Bhd, a company in renewable energy solutions, signs six agreements to produce biofuels from Jatropha biomass using catalytic pressure-less depolymerization (CDP) technology.

The signing of the agreements was witnessed by Minister of Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry, Dato’ Mustapa Mohamed and Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities, Datuk Peter Chin Fah Kui.

Chairman of Platinum Energy Group, Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Abi Musa Asa’Ari Bin Mohamed Nor said, “We are grateful that both Ministers have shown their support as their Ministries will play a very crucial role in supporting the efforts of Platinum Energy to develop the bio-energy sector.”

He said Platinum Energy’s integrated sustainable approach in developing its green energy platform is not only beneficial to the country environmentally but also economically as it will help create and support spin-off industries such as agro-research for cultivation of Jatropha, commercial plantation and commoditization of Jatropha as energy crop and the processing of Jatropha biomass into green diesel.

“There has never been an integrated approach to develop a sustainable biofuels platform. But finally, with the signing today, Platinum Energy is in the position to provide, a total end-to-end solution to produce sustainable green energy through biofuels,” Mr Jespal Deol Abdullah, Managing Director of Platinum Energy Sdn Bhd.

He said that Platinum Energy is entering into a partnership with Nandan Biomatrix Limited, a pioneer in energy crops in India, to develop a sustainable integrated supply chain for biofuels. Nandan Biomatrix has applied for four patents in 2007 for Jatropha Curcas which includes the process of developing high seed yield and high oil content varieties. Jatropha is an inedible, non-food based crop that could be planted in non-arable, marginal land.

“Working with Nandan is very important to us because we have been searching for a sustainable energy crop for a very long time. Nandan’s Jatropha is perfect for our CDP technology as we will be able to optimise our output in the plant to produce green diesel – the next generation biofuels,” he added.

Platinum Energy is also signing a Technology Commercialisation Programme with Nandan Alphakat Technologies Ltd to commercialise the biomass-to-liquid CDP technology to produce green diesel.

Jespal said that CDP technology is the brainchild of Dr Christian Koch, a German scientist and catalyst-specialist. After 30 years of research and marketplace deployment, CDP is the first economical and environmentally-friendly energy process using renewable resources as well as a wide variety of waste material. CDP is already established in six countries worldwide – Bulgaria, Canada, Germany, Italy, Mexico and Spain.

“CDP is effective, inexpensive, enables decentralised production, able to use most organic raw materials and most importantly, environmentally friendly. We can use the Jatropha plant matter in its entirety and not just oilseeds which means higher income for farmers and higher yield for the fuel producer,” he added.

Jespal also said, “The combined use of patented Jatropha technology with a third generation biomass-to-liquid technology in CDP is providing us the technological and business edge to produce next generation biofuels from sustainably produced, perennial crop.. What we have successfully created is the first end-to-end sustainable green energy solution in this region.”

Other than signing agreements with Nandan Biomatrix and Nandan-Alphakat, Platinum Energy also entered into a strategic partnership agreement with local renewable energy player, Octagon Consolidated Bhd.

Jespal said, “We are not in this industry alone and it is important for us to have partners that will complement our strength and advantages. We are confident that we can both leverage on each other to develop a sustainable green energy platform to produce the next generation biofuel.”

Platinum Energy also entered into memorandums of understanding with Koperasi Rizqi Anugraha and PT Aneka Industri Jarak for Jatropha cultivation programme in Banten and South Sulawesi respectively.

The commercial plantation of Jatropha for about 200,000 hectares in Indonesia is scheduled to begin in third quarter 2008.

On the local front, Nandan Platinum Sdn Bhd signed a memorandum of understanding with the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI) to develop Jatropha as a bio-energy crop in Malaysia through scientific and educational cooperation.

“It is important that we are getting the support from MARDI and the Malaysian Government to further develop Jatropha as a bio-energy crop. In the long run, Malaysia will stand to benefit from the success of this industry as it will create many spin-off industries that will further help develop the country,” Sri Dato’ Sri Abi Musa Asa’Ari Bin Mohamed Nor said at the signing ceremony.

Platinum Energy Sdn Bhd is targeting to have a demo plant ready by July 2008. The demo plant will be able to showcase CDP technology using Jatropha biomass as the feedstock.

“Today’s ceremony is just a small step as we have exciting plans that will spur the biofuels industry in Malaysia and this region to greater heights,” concluded Jespal.
